The word Advent is a derivative of the Latin word adventus meaning "coming".  In the context of this holiday it refers to the coming of Christ or birth of Christ.  Holding the holiday four weeks before Christmas is symbolic of the four millennium between the Fall of Adam and the Birth of Christ.  Historically is was a time of fasting, repentance, and preparation.

Humperdinck's charming Hansel and Gretel story is told behind the 24 windows in words and illustrations by Berthe Amoss, children's book author and illustrator. Open the 24 windows, one each day beginning December 1, and follow the enchanting story. This package includes the following: a three-dimensional gingerbread house, a retelling of the story, 24 hidden windows with words and illustrations behind the windows, an envelope for convenient mailing of the gingerbread house, a cardboard stiffener which ensures that the calendar can be mailed without damage, and a convenient, resealable poly bag. Size: 5 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 7 1/2.
