was a prominent politician and confederate patriot. He was born in Kentucky but later claimed Mississippi as his home. He graduated from West Point and served in the Black Hawk, Mexican, and Civil War. He was selected as President of the Confederate States of America on February 9, 1861. After the civil war, he was imprisoned for two years and upon his release, spent most of his remaining life in Mississippi seclusion.
Today the holiday is recognized in Southern States. |
