Lady Day or Vernal Equinox

Which day?

March 25

Earliest Observance?

Unknown

Demographic Practice?

Catholics, Wiccan

While the Vernal Equinox occurs around March 20th of each year, the Roman Catholics have named March 25th to be the day of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary or simply "Lady Day."  Astronomically, the Vernal Equinox is the day the sun passes the equator in the earthīs ecliptical orbit around the sun.  This phenomon results in exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness and signifies the changeover from darkness to light.

To Wiccans, it is a time of conception and new growth.  It is celebrated on March 21, the vernal equinox instead of March 25.

As with a number of Christian holidays, they were fashioned after Pagan holidays and rituals to convert and unite common people from Pagan worship to Christianity.
