This 3 disk boxed set is the perfect Rhythm and Blues for the occasion.

It started as a practice of confession immediately prior to the Lenten season as it is celebrated on the Tuesday before Ash Wedneday.  While tied to religious observance, in practice, the celebrations of this day have been anything but reverent.  From the middle ages to today, large pancake breakfasts, races, and jubilation have been associated with this date.

The observance of this date probably started in prehistoric times.  The few days of this celebration are thought to represent the additional days added to the lunar calendar each year to make it coincide with the solar calendar.  Because these days were outside of ordinary time, all laws, customs, and rules were considered void.  To a certain extent this tradition continues with wild partying icon, masked identities, and grotesque processions.  New Orleans is famous for its Mardi Gras or Carnival celebrations.
